Ruth Sabrosa offers Hypnobirthing and Mindful Mothering courses in Muswell Hill and East Finchley.

After using Hypnobirthing for the birth of her first daughter, she decided to train as a practitioner herself with the belief that every mum-to-be should be entitled to a positive birth experience. Ruth explains to what it is all about.

What is Hypnobirthing?

Essentially, Hypnobirthing = Relaxed birthing. The mind and body relax in harmony so that the woman’s over-busy conscious mind doesn’t interfere with the ancient wisdom of her body during the birthing process. She learns self-hypnosis techniques to remain calm and relaxed throughout her labour and birth, enabling her to birth her baby instinctively and without fear. She remains in control.

Hypnobirthing is actually based on ancient techniques that were used centuries ago by women who understood that relaxation was essential for the uterus to work effectively. In 1913 British Obstetrician Dr Grantly Dick-Read first discussed the Fear-Tension-Pain cycle as he observed some women giving birth in a more comfortable and easy way than others. He realised that if fear was present, it created tension in the body and that tension led to pain. He suggested that women prepare for labour by reducing their fear about birth, by education, deep relaxation and special breathing techniques. These components are the foundations of Hypnobirthing programmes today.

Ruth Sabrosa discovered for herself how effective Hypnobirthing was when she used it for her own 2 births, the first in a hospital setting and the second, a home breech birth. She trained with Maggie Howell in 2011 and taught Natal Hypnotherapy to hundreds of couples in North London for six years with great success. She qualified as a hypnotherapist in 2016 and has used her skills and knowledge as a mother, birth companion, hypnotherapist and qualified hypnobirthing instructor to develop her own complete one-day Hypnobirthing course in Muswell Hill. It can be taken at any time during pregnancy and is the perfect complement to other antenatal classes or it works as a stand alone workshop. Groups are very small, affordable and tailored to individual needs or Ruth also offers private workshops in the comfort of your own home.

What will I learn on the day?

Mindful Mothering

After all the preparation and hard work, the child is born, and with it, THE MOTHER

But who supports the mother in her new crucial role?

She may have family, friends but they may have their own busy lives. She may live in London far from any relatives, her partner probably works long hours to allow them to live in the capital city: she may work long hours too, inside or outside, of the home. She may rely on books and the internet to guide her. They say it takes a village to raise a child so in the absence of the village Ruth set up Mindful Mothering in Muswell Hill and East Finchley.

A monthly support group for mothers at any stage of mothering; whether you are pregnant, have a baby, a toddler, a school-age child, a home-schooled child, a teenager, multiples or a combination of all. We are all in this together.

Mindful Mothering evolved after many chats with mum friends in the playground, in the bar, at some bouncing baby class or other, when Ruth realised that we as mothers need all the support we can get!

Sessions are £10 per person and will be held at Tomato Tutors, 174 High Road, East Finchley, London N2 9AS. Babes in arms welcome.
